SINU PLANS TO ENGAGE IN OPEN DISTANCE LEARNING

The Solomon Islands National University plans to engage in Open Distance Learning to meet the growing educational needs of more students, especially in rural areas in the country

A statement from SINU yesterday said this comes after a successful consultation and planning workshop held at the Kukum Campus yesterday.

Pro Vice Chancellor Academy Dr. Patricia Rodie told local media, SINU was unable to accommodate more than twelve thousand applicants as it can only take two thousand students to study on campus.

Dr Rodie says the open distance learning program will provide more accessible education for those who are unable to study at the university campus.

She adds the Common Wealth Learning and SINU joint consultation meeting was to develop an action plan for this year and the implementation framework to improve access to education through the open distance learning program.

Meanwhile, Professor Nita Temmerman of the Common Wealth Learning says this project is a very ambitious and exciting program for Solomon Islands.

Professor Temmerman commends SINU can do better through the Open Distance Learning program by enabling those in the remote areas to fulfill the Ministry of Educations mandate to increase the quality of education.

SIBC News understands the second part of the consultation is expected to be held in July.
