Solomon Islands Concludes Participation at UNOC3 in Nice, France

Nice, France – Saturday 14 June 2025 — The Solomon Islands Government has officially concluded its engagement at the 2025 United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (UNOC3), held from 9–13 June 2025 in Nice, France.

Led by Prime Minister Honourable Jeremiah Manele, the Solomon Islands delegation actively participated in all ten ocean action panels, high-level plenary sessions and side events throughout the week, reaffirming the country’s commitment to sustainable ocean stewardship and multilateral cooperation to conserve and sustainably use marine resources for sustainable development.

The Conference concluded with the formal adoption of the Nice Ocean Action Plan, a declaration titled “Our Ocean, Our Future: United for Urgent Action”, which commits Member States to bold and transformative steps to address the global ocean emergency. The declaration highlights the need for accelerated action on climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, pollution reduction, and the sustainable use of marine resources.

The Solomon Islands Government welcomed the declaration and the specific recognition of the vulnerabilities and leadership of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including commitments to address sea-level rise, enhance ocean finance, conserve at least 30% of marine and coastal ecosystems by 2030, support small scale and artisanal fisheries, and the precautionary approach to deep sea mining.

“The ocean is at the heart of our identity and survival. Solomon Islands stands ready to implement the outcomes of UNOC3 and champion bold, inclusive, and sustained action for our ocean’s future,” said Prime Minister Manele during one of the ocean action panel discussions.

As the UNOC3 concludes, most members of the Solomon Islands delegation will begin their return journey to Honiara and other official duties. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manele and officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet will travel onward to Vienna, Austria, to attend the OPEC Summit. The Prime Minister will thereafter attend the Melanesian Leaders’ Summit in Suva on the 23rd June.

Prime Minister Manele is expected back in the country on the 25th June. In his absence, Deputy Prime Minister Honourable Frederick Kologeto will continue to serve as Acting Prime Minister.
