It marks the first time that the Solomon Islands has led an international governmental observer mission in a post‑conflict context, underscoring the nation’s growing role in global peace and democratic governance.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Mitini described the role as both historic and trans-formative for the SIEC.
“For a young and emerging democracy like the Solomon Islands, being entrusted with the responsibility to lead an international intergovernmental observer mission in a post-conflict nation on the African continent is both humbling and historic. This appointment reflects the growing confidence in our Electoral Commission’s integrity and capability. It is a challenge worth embracing, as it elevates our democratic standing and strengthens our contribution to the global community.”
SIEC acknowledges this participation as a major achievement in the nation’s electoral development. The Commission’s involvement in the g7+ mission showcases the increasing recognition of Solomon Islands as a credible practitioner of democratic elections, and reflects SIEC’s expanding contribution to south–south cooperation, peer learning, and global electoral strengthening efforts.
Ms. Mitini noted that leading the mission provided valuable insight into post-conflict electoral governance, legislative challenges, and reform pathways.
“Being appointed to lead such an intergovernmental mission, focused on strengthening the legal and institutional frameworks that govern elections in post-conflict environments, is both a privilege and an important learning opportunity for the SIEC and myself as electoral administrator,” she said.
The g7+ Coalition brings together countries that have emerged from conflict and are uniquely positioned to provide practical, context-driven recommendations to support electoral improvement. Participation in this mission equips the SIEC with fresh perspectives that can contribute to ongoing reforms aimed at building a resilient, inclusive, and legally robust electoral system for the Solomon Islands.
The SIEC extends its appreciation to the Government and the people of Guinea-Bissau, the g7+ Secretariat, and fellow member nations for the strong spirit of cooperation and shared commitment to strengthening democracy
Through its active participation, the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission continues to demonstrate leadership in shaping Electoral Reforms and Strengthening Effort through Observation Mission on electoral governance, financial management, and democratic resilience both within the Pacific region and globally.
