Police Commissioner, Frank Prendergast has appealed to the general public to stay away from the counting stations and to await public announcements of election results on the radio.
Counting officially began in the country at various counting stations across the country this morning.
In a media conference this morning, Police Commissioner Prendergast commended the public for yesterday’s peaceful polling and said police will continue operations until the announcement of the Prime Minister.
“We’re obviously continuing our operations right through until after the announcement of the Prime Minister and so we’ll be very very busy over the next week or so and positioned to deal with anything that may arise, but again I think if we continue to have the community support and the maturity that we’ve seen over the last few days particularly yesterday I think it will be a good result and a good process.”
The Police Commissioner also appealed to the general public to await election results on the radio.
“What I would ask members of the public to do is to stay away from the counting stations as much as possible. Counting is ongoing at the moment, the results of the counts will be announced on, you know, on SIBC, on the Internet and in local papers so I think just for the general good order of the process it’s better if people stay away from the counting places if possible. The RSIPF worked with the Electoral Commission yesterday to secure the ballot boxes, we’re also working to ensure that there’s security around the counting stations”.
