A pilot study to record and document oral traditions about the nature and history of artificial islands in the Langalanga Lagoon in Malaita will begin towards the end of this month.
The National Museum says this study is part of the work to implement the Government’s Nasinol Policy Framework blong KALSA.
The national policy wants to establish a national database and effective system that would manage and protect cultural landscapes that have archaeological and historical significance.
Meanwhile, the Premier of Malaita Province, Edwin Suibaea has expressed his appreciation of the proposed project, saying data collected from the pilot study will be incorporated into the cultural tourism development plans of the Province.
Premier Suibaea says province’s plans are specifically designed for proper protection and management of cultural landscapes, such as artificial islands.
SIBC News understands the European Consortium of Pacific Studies team is also a major supporter of this initiative.
