A suspect is still at large in Makira-Ulawa Province after he allegedly set on fire a Police outboard motor canoe, and its 40-horse power engine.
Provincial Police Commander Peter Sitai said, three operations were conducted after the alleged incident early this month but they were unsuccessful.
PPC Sitai explained the incident occurred after the police took the suspect’s chain saw as part of their investigation into another alleged crime at Nana logging Camp, East Makira.
He said, they conducted the investigations at a village in land of Pihuru, leaving the boat ashore at Karie Village.
It was alleged the suspect came, poured petrol around the boat and set it on fire.
PPC Sitai said a witness informed the police about the incident and they returned on board a private boat to Kirakira Police Station the next day.
“The witness who was there at that time, ran after the police officers and tried to tell them about what happened. He also told them that the suspect who burnt the boat and engine was armed with a bush knife to chase them.”
PPC Sitai appeals to people from Wainoni to assist police with information relating to the matter, saying destroying properties is a crime.
