Traffic light to be installed at HCC pedestrian crossing

The HCC pedestrian crossing

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) is pleased to announce that a high-quality, solar-powered traffic light will be first trialed at the pedestrian crossing next to Honiara City Council (HCC) Headquarters.

MID’s Transport Infrastructure Management Service Division (TIMSD) has engaged a local supplier for this road technology, and work on installing it will commence upon completion of formalities.

Other pedestrian crossings along the main highway have been identified, and the installation of pedestrian lights should follow later, after the trial.

Deputy Secretary of Technical, Mike Qaqara, said that the traffic light installation will enhance road safety, improve traffic flow, and facilitate a more organized transportation system within the business center of Honiara.

“This traffic light is selected to suit our conditions.

We are committed to ensuring the safety of all road users in Honiara, and this upgrade marks a crucial step towards achieving better traffic management and reducing congestion at key points in our city,” he said.

The ongoing Japan International Cooperation Agency-funded “Capacity Improvement of Urban Transport Management in Honiara” project is also set to develop standards for road traffic signs. 

These infrastructural upgrades underscore the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) policy to modernize Honiara’s infrastructure and enhance safety for road users, especially as road upgrade projects are concurrently underway.
