TROPICAL DISTURBANCE WATCH ADVICE ISSUED FOR SOLOMON ISLANDS

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Services has issued a Tropical Disturbance Watch advice for all provinces and islands in the country as of half past seven this morning.

A statement from the Met Office today said this is due to a tropical depression with a central pressure of 1000 Hector-Pascals located approximately 156 nautical miles Northeast of Taumako, Duff Islands, Temotu Province and moving Southwest at 0.3 knots.

The Met Office said this is expected to continue developing within the next 24 to 48 hours, with expected winds of 15 to 25 knots, gusting to 30 knots at times with moderate seas.

Heavy swells and coastal flooding with heavy rain at times with squally thunderstorms are also expected.

The Met Office warns people should take precautionary measures as such can pose a danger to lives and property.

It advised people to listen to the national broadcaster and other FM stations for further advice.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has also issued a “No Tsunami Threat” warning to Solomon Islands at 10.17am.

This follows an undersea earthquake of magnitude 6.0, which occurred on 9.18am.

The quake was approximately located near 246 kilometers East of New Britain, Papua New Guinea, at a Latitude of 6.5 degrees South and Longitude 151.7 degrees East.

The Met Office says no further updates will be issued unless the situation changes.
