The UN Women Solomon Islands in collaboration with the Honiara Central Market Vendor Association today celebrated the International Day of Rural Women in Honiara.
The International Day of Rural Women falls on October 15 every year and recognises the role rural women play in ensuring food security and in the development and stability of the rural areas.
The event also aims to remind society how much they owe to rural women and to give value and credit to their work.
In an interview with SIBC, Marnie Gilbert of UN Women says the day is celebrated to recognise the hard work of women in the rural areas.
“So today 15th October is the International Day of Rural Women so we UN Women would like to celebrate this day to recognise the work of rural women, highlight the challenges of rural women but really it’s about celebrating the hard work of rural women in Solomon Islands as well as everywhere around the world.”
The UN Women Communication Officer also says the annual event has attracted a lot of people to witness the occasion, including the Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Honiara City Clerk and representatives of market vendors and the public.
