A vessel suspected of conducting illegal fishing activities in Solomon Islands waters has been arrested and is now detained at the Aola police patrol boat base in Honiara.
Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast confirmed the arrest in his weekly media conference yesterday.
He says the arrest was made after police received information from the Forum Fisheries Agency Headquarters in Honiara.
“The patrol boat Lata was dispatched late last week on information from the Forum Fisheries Organisation about a vessel that was suspected of illegal fishing in Solomon Islands waters. That vessel was detained and you’ll probably be able to see it down at Aola wharf now and the matter is being investigated by Fisheries. The police definitely we’re involved in that and I was very much aware of it. I think it’s very important that we work with the other stakeholders such as Fisheries to protect Solomon Islands’ natural resources and really I think it’s a very good success for Fisheries and for the RSIPF and I commend everyone involved in the activity.”
