The Chairman of the newly established Political Parties Commission says women’s presence in decision-making at the National level is very important.
Sir Paul Tovua made the statement yesterday at the official opening of a training on Transformational Leadership in Honiara.
In his speech, delivered on his behalf by Audrey Manu of UN Women, Sir Paul said lessons from around the world show that there is more economic gain with more women leadership roles at the national level.
“I would like to emphasise the importance of women’s presence in decision-making at the national level. We now know from lessons around the world that the more of women in leadership roles at the national level the more economic gains we will have as well as the lower level of perceived corruption in a country.”
Sir Paul also thanked UN Women and local organizations for the efforts to empower women through education on politics and national machineries.
“I would like to thank the UN Women and our local organisation to strengthen your efforts to empower women through education, especially on national political processes and the machinery within parliament. I would also like to plead with you organisations of this workshop that it would be most effective that you also work collectively with political parties in Solomon Islands so that they are educated on the value of women in political leadership roles and the quality of women candidates ready to contest election.”
The Transformational Leadership training is funded by the EU, and facilitated by UN Women and Vois Blo Mere Solomon.
