Work has begun on the Tatamba Wharf upgrade and rehabilitation.
Tatamba, a wharf on the eastern end of Santa Isabel, is one of four wharves to be improved under the second phase of the Domestic Maritime Support Project.
The Project is financed by the Solomon Islands Government, ADB, the Australian Government, and the New Zealand Aid Programme.
A government statement says, the upgrade will involve demolishing the existing wharf and building a new reinforced concrete wharf which will be higher to minimize wave and debris affecting the new structure.
It is believed, the new wharf on Huali Bay will boost access to markets for copra and cocoa production and other economic activities.
The improved shipping services and new wharves and jetties are reducing barriers to market access and are promoting the growth of rural production.
The franchise shipping scheme is allowing private sector operators to deliver shipping services to destinations that would not be commercially viable.
