World War Two records kept at the National Archives of Solomon Islands have been inscribed in the Memory of the World for Asia and Pacific register.
Set up in 1998, Memory of the World for Asia and the Pacific register is the regional forum for UNESCO’s global memory of the world programme.
It aimed to assist with preservation of and universal access to documentary heritage of the Asia Pacific region, and to increase awareness of the existence and significance of the heritage.
With the inscription announced today, Solomon Islands can now benefit from support associated with the care and accessibility of the inscribed collection.
Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hon. Bartholomew Parapolo officially announced the inscription today at the National Archives in Honiara.
“As the Minister responsible for the National Archives I am honoured and proud to officially announce that the 8th General Assembly Meeting the Solomon Islands World War Two records collection was voted in favour of and is now inscribed in the Memory of the World for Asia and Pacific Register”, he said.
“This is a recognition of the global scene by UNESCO, which is something that Solomon Islands must be proud of.”
The Minister thanked Supervising Government Archivist, Mrs Margaret Inifiri in taking the lead to successfully secure the records inscription.
Minister Parapolo said he will acknowledge the Memory of the World Secretary and UNESCO through a formal letter for the significant recognition.
