Year 7 National Placement Committee Meeting Underway

Honiara, Solomon Islands (November 17, 2025) – The Education Providers National Placement Committee is currently attending a week-long confirmation meeting in Honiara to consolidate and verify the 2026 placement of Year 6 pupils into Year 7.

Organized by the School Services Division within the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) and held at Rock Haven from 17–21 November, the objectives of the meeting are to ensure that:

  • All Education Provider (EP) Placement Committees share their default 2026 Year 7 placement lists (CHS, PSS, NSS).
  • The default placement lists are reconciled to identify any duplications or cases requiring renegotiation.
  • Placement lists are consolidated, and EPs scrutinize any duplications, missing schools, or missing students.
  • The final 2026 Year 7 placement list is completed and presented to the Permanent Secretary for approval.

The Year 6 to Year 7 National Placement Committee is made up of 40 Education Providers. Each Education Provider has its own committee that collects assessment data for Year 6 pupils in the schools they operate.

Each year, the Year 6 to Year 7 National Placement Committee, comprising Education Providers and MEHRD, meets between November and December to determine and confirm Year 6 pupils’ placements into Year 7 for the following academic year in secondary schools throughout the country.

This annual process has been in place since MEHRD terminated the Secondary Entrance Examination in 2019, which primary pupils previously sat at the end of Year 6. It was replaced with a classroom-based assessment system that gives teachers a central role in evaluating their pupils’ learning.

One of the key criteria used to determine Year 6 to Year 7 placement is students’ performance in teacher-designed assessment tasks for the subjects they study in Year 6, including mathematics, English, social studies, and science.

Year 6 pupils’ scores from these assessment tasks are recorded and compiled by their teachers and submitted to each Education Provider Placement Committee. These scores are then used to determine Year 7 placements for the following year.

The annual meeting of the National Year 6 to Year 7 Placement Committee ensures that the default placement lists prepared by each Education Provider (for the schools they own and operate) are reconciled to avoid duplication or unnecessary renegotiation, and that the lists are consolidated, verified, and finalized.

The final 2026 Year 7 Placement List will be presented to the Permanent Secretary for vetting and approval.
