The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) will be sending 8 new officers to the United Nation’s Peace keeping mission in Sudan.
Police Commissioner, Matthew Varley confirmed this today during his weekly Police Media conference.
Commissioner Varley said all the selected officers had met all the training requirements and medical checks.
He said they were now waiting on the UN’s approval for their deployment.
“Unlike the first group, this batch will also feature female officers,” he said.
“The officers will be unarmed, but this is normal for the mission and our officers currently serving the UN are also unarmed.”
Mr Varley said the officers will be involved in training and capacity development while on deployment.
He said the officers will not be involved in any front line operations and military style operations.
“We haven’t made any commitment to any specific number, but the reason that I’ve chosen 8 is that they are well trained and willing to be deployed, “he said.
“We will also assess each deployed officers each year, but we are not sure whether the numbers will increase each year.”
Currently Solomon Islands Police has 5 officers serving in Sudan under UN mission.
