The winner of Solomon Islands’ first ever medal at the Commonwealth Games returned to a warm reception from family and friends today at the Henderson International Airport.
Jenly Wini snatched the country’s historic medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia by lifting 189kg to earn bronze in the women’s 58kg division.
An emotional Ms Wini told SIBC the medal was the greatest achievement of her career.
“I feel proud and very happy,” she said. “I spent years training, and this Commonwealth Games was my last, but I achieved something that I dreamed of, so I’m very happy.”
Ms Wini plans to take a month-long break before resuming training to prepare for next year’s Pacific Games in Samoa.
And she said she wants to share her experiences with aspiring weightlifters in Solomon Islands.
Ms Wini intends to coach the next generation of weightlifters during the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, and she hopes girls in the country will take up her sport.
“If you dream about something you want to do, you can do it,” she said.
