Four prisoners have been released from the Tetere Correctional Center in North Guadalcanal today after a full assessment by the Solomon Islands Parole Board to the Minister for Police and Correctional Services.
The Correctional Services Solomon Islands (CSSI) today says one of the four was convicted on 27 July 1988 and had served 26 years, while three others had served 22, 19 and 16 years respectively.
All were serving life sentences at the CSSI Tetere center.
Upon their release today, the former life timers were escorted by Correctional officers to their respective home villages.
CSSI adds, the four life timers are the first to be released on parole following the introduction of the Correctional Services (Parole) Regulations 2014, which was gazetted on 30 May this year.
The revised Parole Regulations allows for life sentenced prisoners who served 10 years or more of their sentence to apply for parole.
SIBC News understands, Section 75 of the Correctional Services Act 2008 provides for the government to release eligible prisoners to parole following a full assessment and positive recommendation from the Solomon Islands Parole Board to the Minister for Police.
