The National Parliament has elected South New Georgia, Rendova and Tetepare MP, David Gina, as the new Deputy Speaker.
Mr Gina was the only candidate nominated before the close of nominations at midday on Monday, 3 August, and was declared elected unopposed when Parliament resumed sitting today.
Clerk to Parliament Jefferson Halu officially announced the result, confirming that Mr Gina met all constitutional and procedural requirements for the position.
“I am also satisfied that the only nomination received met the requirements of the Standing Orders and is valid,” Mr Halu said.
“Therefore, I am honoured to declare that the Member of Parliament for South New Georgia, Rendova and Tetepare is duly elected as the Deputy Speaker.”
Mr Gina was nominated by West Makira MP Derrick Manuari.
Speaking after his election, Mr Gina thanked Members of Parliament for their confidence and trust.
“I accept this responsibility with deep humility, recognising that the office of the Deputy Speaker is one of honour, impartiality and service to Parliament and to our nation,” he said.
He said he would uphold the Constitution, Standing Orders and traditions of Parliament.
“I will strive to discharge my duties with fairness, integrity, respect and without favour to any side of the House,” Mr Gina added.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Patson Oti congratulated Mr Gina on his election and acknowledged the service of former Deputy Speaker Morris Toiraena.
The position became vacant following Mr Toiraena’s appointment as a Minister of the Crown.
