Lord Mayor of the Honiara City Council (HCC), Eddie Siapu has acknowledged Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare for switching diplomatic allegiance to China from Taiwan.
Mayor Siapu voiced this after being part of a successful and eye-opening trip to China recently.
“I would like to thank Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare for his wisdom in switching diplomatic allegiance to China. I can confidently say that the decision is best for the Solomon Islands,” he said.
The City Mayor added, the results of their visit to China have been nothing short of fruitful.
“We were truly overwhelmed during the visit. I believe we have taken home a lot of positive experiences from this exciting trip,” Mr Siapu stated.
As Mayor Siapu notes, the shift in diplomatic relations to China represents a significant opportunity for Honiara and the Solomon Islands as a whole. With China’s support, the city and the country can achieve greater economic development, improved social services, and stronger political ties with one of the world’s largest and most powerful nations.
Of course, there are sure to be challenges along the way as the switch in diplomatic relations is implemented. But the Mayor is confident that with the support of the national government, Honiara and the Solomon Islands can rise to the occasion and take full advantage of this historic opportunity. –ENDS//
