The National Museum will host the exhibition ‘World War II’ bombs in the Solomon Islands’ at the National Art Gallery in Honiara.
The photographic exhibition is a fresh look at the current situation of unexploded ordnance UXO in the country.
It covers a factual snapshot of the history of WW2 battles, life with the leftover ordnance and current efforts to manage the issue of UXO.
On a recent field visit, the Australian non-government organisation NGO SafeGround documented the impact of the leftover ordnance from the war that ended 70 years ago.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police and National Security Edmond Sikua says, UXO is an issue of national importance.
He adds international awareness will contribute to increased funding for UXO clearance operations.
The project was funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, looks at the Solomon Islands UXO problems and produces a report, exhibition and a short film which will be released to the international community.
It will open to the public from Thursday 14th to Wednesday 27th May at the National Art Gallery.
