OZI & SIG DEVELOP NEW PROJECT AND MAPPING SYSTEM

An Australian Government Science Agency team is pooling resources with the National Government on the development of a new ‘project and mapping’ storage system.

The Australian Scientists work alongside the ICT Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, Ministry of Environment Climate Change Disaster Management and Meteorology and Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.

The Australian High Commission in Honiara says this is to assist the Solomon Islands Government with planning and managing coastal areas by using computer information and easy-to-use mapping tools.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Director of Inshore Fisheries within the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Ms. Rosalie Masu says activities in our coastal areas have never been properly recorded.

Chief Conservation Officer, Environment, and Conservation Division of the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Disaster Management Ms. Agnetha Vave-Karamui says the project will enable officers access information and produce useful maps from their desktop.

The Enhancing Pacific Ocean Governance (EPOG) Project, is collaborating with the Secretariat of the Pacific Communities (SPC) to provide standard mapping tools in line with SPC’s Geo-informatics and Spatial Data Plan.

EPOG is funded through the Australian Government Aid Program and managed by the Australian Department of the Environment.

The EPOG project is funded until the end of this year.
