Police in Western Province on Thursday arrested two suspects in connection with an alleged armed robbery at the Malohuna logging camp in Harapa, Shortland Islands.
According to police, it was alleged that around 10 men — eight believed to be from Bougainville and two from Solomon Islands — were armed with firearms when they robbed the camp manager of the One Link Logging Company.
The men allegedly stole goods, other valuables and about $8,000 in cash from the company’s canteen.
It was alleged the men fired several gun shots in the air before leaving the site.
“The successful arrest of the two alleged robbers was possible in a joint police operation comprising of the Police Response Team, police from Western and Choiseul provinces as well police investigators from Honiara and officers of Police Maritime,” Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu, provincial police commander for Western Province, said.
The two suspects each face one count of robbery. They appeared in court on Saturday and were ordered to be remanded in custody in Gizo.
They will reappear in the Gizo Magistrates’ Court within two weeks.
Investigations continue as other suspects in the robbery are still at large.
