Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, PAC, will today begin Inquiries into seven Auditor General reports. Among the Audit reports are the Managing Sustainable Fisheries in Solomon Islands EEZ; the National Cattle Rehabilitation Project; and the National Transport Fund of 2011 and 2012.
The Sales Tax Amendment, which Parliament recently passed, will improve the Government’s tax collection mechanisms. Finance Minister Rick Hou says the amendment will ensure the prepayment of sales tax at the first point of sale for certain goods and services.

A young man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a man with a screwdriver. The stabbing took place at Lungga in February, 2010. On the night of February 10 that year, the deceased and his brother took a taxi from the China Town bus-stop and headed East to Henderson.

A man is standing trial in the High Court for allegedly stabbing another man with a screwdriver in February 2010 at Lungga, East Honiara. The deceased was later found at the Panatina field. The Crown’s case is that the accused intended to cause the death or grievous bodily harm to the deceased.

Guadalcanal Police have arrested a 19-year old man in relation to an alleged rape of a 3-year old girl, at the Sun Valley area over the weekend. Following police investigation, police raided the suspect’s home on early Saturday and apprehended him.
High Court judge Stephen Pallaras has acquitted a man from rape charges yesterday because there was no consistent evidence against him. The defendant was accused of allegedly raping a woman from Makira Province at Burnscreek in 2012. His trial started Monday this week.

A 55 year old Taiwanese national who escaped from a court ruling in 2009 was re-arrested by police. A statement from the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, RSIPF, said this was after the accused and his co-offender have failed to pay out a large sum of money against them in 2009.
