A weaving show previously at Mamara, Northwest Guadalcanal

The Guadalcanal Provincial Government’s Culture and Tourism Division will host a four-day Weaving Festival from Friday, 31 July to Monday, 3 August 2026, at the SINU FOPA Panatina Lower Campus.
The event will bring together talented traditional weavers from across the province to showcase their skills and cultural heritage.
Speaking to SIBC News, Head of the Culture and Tourism Division, Jacinta Vagha, said the Weaving Festival will coincide with Guadalcanal Province’s Second Appointed Day, which will be celebrated on Monday, 3 August 2026.
“The Weaving Festival was first introduced in 2017 as an annual event but had been suspended in recent years.
“This year, we are bringing it back, and it will coincide with Guadalcanal Province’s Second Appointed Day celebrations on 3 August.
“We have already set up a mini cultural village at the venue, where activities will take place throughout the four-day festival,” she said.
Ms Vagha said the festival aims to promote the province’s unique traditional weaving practices while encouraging young people to learn and preserve these skills for future generations.
“There will be a weaving competition for both young and experienced weavers, as well as free weaving workshops for children and young people to learn traditional weaving,” she said.
“Our main goal is to showcase the skills and talents of Guadalcanal’s local weavers while passing this important cultural knowledge on to the next generation.”
Ms Vagha is encouraging people from Guadalcanal and Honiara to visit the cultural village during the four-day festival to experience the province’s traditional weaving and cultural heritage.
