During the 6th meeting of the 10th Parliament that commenced on June 26 and adjourned sine die yesterday, Parliament passed two bills.
The 2017 Supplementary Appropriation (No.2) Bill 2017 was passed on August 30, and the Provincial Government (Amendment) Bill 2017 passed on November 23.
The Strata Titles Bill 2017, Legal Profession Bill 2017, and Prescription of Ministers (Amendment) Bill 2017 went through the first reading stage during the 6th meeting.
Other bills, including the Anti-Corruption Bill 2017 and the Constitutional (Amendment) (Dual Citizenship) Bill 2017, have been put on notice but have not gone through their first reading.
In his first address to the nation after being elected earlier this month, Prime Minister Rick Houenipwela said the anti-corruption bill will be implemented before the end of the 10th Parliament in response to citizens’ demands.
Prime Minister Houenipwela reiterated the idea of serving the interests of the people when presenting the sine die motion in Parliament last week.
“Our people are watching and listening,” he said. “It is time for this beloved country to rise to its challenges, but in order for this to happen, we — all 50 members as elected leaders — work together to achieve our national goals.”
